Forest Hills Cemetery is consecrated.
June 28, 1848
Architect: Henry A.S. Dearborn, with Daniel Brims. It is located on the former Joel Seaverns Farm at 95 Forest Hills Avenue. Among the first “garden” cemeteries in the U.S. (the first was Mount Auburn in Cambridge in 1831) and the first municipal garden cemetery, it is transferred to the private, non-profit Proprietors of Forest Hills in 1868. The gates by Charles Panter are added in 1865, the gatehouse by Gridley Bryant in 1868, Milton Hill in 1890, and a crematory in 1893.
